It’s been 25 years since I did some weaving and I’d forgotten how much fun it is! l got this loom for 635 NOK (approx. $70) in an Arts and Crafts store in Oslo in the end of August, and I have been working on this scarf sporadically since then.
The loom was pretty easy to set up and there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to work with Rowan’s Felted Tweed for my first scarf. I really think that this yarn is perfect for weaving, and is making my scarf look so beautiful, with all these sumptuous colours and luxurious feel! It really looks like a fabric that would be fit for one of those legendary and incredibly expensive Chanel tweed jackets!
I still have no idea of the loom’s name in English, but I am sure that now that I’ve asked about it, someone will help me out with this. If you know the name in English, please leave a comment. By the way, in case you are wondering, in Norwegian it’s called a “grindvev”.
Edit September 16th: Thanks to everyone who pitched in with your two cents! We now have found out that this is a back strap loom using a Rigid Heddle.
And in case you are wondering which colours I am using in Felted Tweed, here they are:
00200 Barbara
0167 Maritime
145 Treacle
0197 Alabaster
We are hoping to get lots of positive feedback on this project, as we really want to do a few tutorials on this. We’d love to show you how to set this up and how easy it is to create something with this loom! So, if you really like the idea of seeing a few tutorials on weaving on our YouTube channel next year, make sure to comment here, as well as on Instagram and on Facebook and hopefully, we will get something recorded when we return from our autumn / winter tour.
This week, on our YouTube Channel, we take you back to our garden to show you what it looks like in the end of summer / beginning of autumn. At this time of the year, we have a great number of lilies and phloxes in bloom, as well as lots of berries. People who visit us right now, in the middle of september, are very surprised to see that our garden is still very much in bloom. Since everything bloms later here and lasts longer, we expect to till have a beautiful carpet of flowers when the first frost start arriving, in the end of October.
