From our archives: Let’s talk about summer and that striped crochet tote bag!

June 9th, 2019.

Summer is such a special time for us, this is when you’ll find us working in the garden at all sorts of weird hours (it doesn’t get dark here right now)  and this is also the time you’ll see us driving our beloved vintage VW “Beetle” from 1969, which we only take out of winter storage to drive during mid-May, June, July, August and early September.

The car has been washed and prepped for the summer season (and after we washed it, it rained immediately, of course) and we have added our Hedvig blanket to the back seat, as we think that the colours of the throw, as well the design, fit the look and atmosphere of our car perfectly!

Summer also means that we get to wear bright and cheerful colours and work on all those crochet projects that we have designed specifically for the season! So you don’t want to miss this week’s tutorial on our colourful crochet tote bag! You can get the pattern in our webshop and watch the tutorial at the end of this post.

Out grocery shopping, with Freja, who loves to sit in the front with us while we drive. Our Hedvig blanket covers the back seat of our car and we are using the oversized striped crochet tote bag for grocery shopping.

We always plant a lot of summer flowers in pots, to keep out on the terrace. This week, we took our newly washed car out for a spin to our local nursery.

Thank you for the mitten patterns! Love to knit Mittens and socks! I tried your second easiest pair of socks, and am now working on the Primrose afghan! I was thinking of doing a few of the mice for the grandkids for Christmas, and now I will do a few pairs of mittens, too! Glad you are both feeling better, stay safe and well!

    • Lily on June 7, 2020 at 8:34 am

    • Deb on June 1, 2020 at 10:50 pm

I love the bags! Hope the mint and brown striped one is in your patterns. Great timing, I’m working on Astri but also want to make a bag. Hope you’re both well.

    • Anne on August 7, 2019 at 1:29 am

Carlos, I saw where you mentioned you had the flu in March. My husband and I both had a terrible time with this same flu last Fall. We were sick for weeks and weeks. We thought we would never get well ( but we did). We were almost like zombies though before it was all over. Glad you are well. Hope Arne missed it!

    • Laura Willumstad on June 21, 2019 at 2:59 am

What is the size of the completed Hedvig blanket? Thank you! Love you guys.

  1. Nei, Dessverre. Finnes kun på engelsk

    • Hilde on June 19, 2019 at 7:38 pm

Hei, jeg har kjøpt totebag mønsteret på engelsk, men finnes det på norsk?

  2. Yes, we were at Chelsea Flower Show a few weeks ago. It was so crowded!

    • Carol G on June 14, 2019 at 8:51 am

Another item to add to my ever increasing list, I am just working on the knitted string bag. Imagine my surprise yesterday while catching up on the BBC Chelsea coverage seeing you two guys casually walking behind someone being interviewed… I had to get my husband to rewind to check I wasn’t seeing things!
    Best wishes to you both

    • Linda Morton on June 12, 2019 at 2:12 pm

I love your Beetle. My husbands first car was a blue ’69 bug. We loved that car.

    • Sheri Nylund on June 12, 2019 at 6:31 am

I love knitting the Norwegian style with Arne and Carlos! I picked up this method quickly. I must be part Norwegian. Thank you for sharing your culture and creativity.

    • Debra Kraus on June 12, 2019 at 12:42 am

    Carlos,
So sorry to hear that you have been ill…but glad to know you aren’t getting bored taking time away from your exciting lives to be with us.
    Take care of yourself.

    • claudia larsen on June 11, 2019 at 10:12 pm

I love your v.w.. I have a 1971 bug. I also love the slipper pattern. I have made 3 pair and can’t take them off. You guys are just great.

  3. When this video was recorded, in early March, I had just barely recovered, after being seriously ill for 3 weeks, with complications from the flu. Sorry of I seem disinterested,I was not, just very tired and still a bit weak.

    • Sandra on June 11, 2019 at 10:20 am

Someday I will try crocheting, I’d rather knit :-). Oooooo, I hope you will put together a tour of your garden this year, it’s so wonderful! Thank you for all your videos!

    • Dana on June 11, 2019 at 5:10 am

Carlos gets to make a bag too! Love this tutorial. Arne you crochet like a freight train on fire! Thanks I’m inspired to get my needle out after many years—thanks you guys! Happy summer the car is adorable!

    • Kathy on June 11, 2019 at 4:46 am

    Thank you! Love your videos.

    • Debra Kraus on June 11, 2019 at 3:48 am

What’s up with Carlos…he seems very disinterested in the whole thing.

    • K2 on June 10, 2019 at 11:32 pm

Pelargoniums, I think. It’s going to take another 50 years before I quit calling them geraniums first then fumbling around for “pelargoniums.” It would help if they were labeled as such large and clearly, too.

    • Mary on June 10, 2019 at 8:24 pm

I am knitting The Doubled Hat that is on page,80 of your book Norwegian Knits with at wist. I believe there is an error on row 11 of the graph. Am I right. I need to rip back. Is there a correction for this graph somewhere.

    • Dorinda Contreras on June 10, 2019 at 4:42 pm

I always love this time of year! I love planting flowers in the spring. We have had a late spring and I have put my veggies in the garden late. My geraniums, that I wintered, are growing strong. Thanks for your great encouragement and help with wintering geraniums. (Sorry Carlos…I can’t remember the correct name of the plant). Have a super week guys!

  4. We have a Mitsubishi SUV

    • Terri McGreer on June 10, 2019 at 1:50 pm

Hi guys. What car do you drive when the Beetle is in storage? Enjoy the summer! Terri

    • Janika Bertone on June 10, 2019 at 9:53 am

Hi Guys. Every time I see your Beetle I think back on the 1961 and 1968 Beetles I had as my first cars. So fun to drive. I went to the nursery and bought geraniums this weekend. All bright pink this year. Keep inspiring me I am looking forward to your next podcast. Bye for now🗽

  5. Yes, you are right, we should definitely mention it. We will from next week onwards.

    • Maibritt Hein on June 10, 2019 at 7:43 am

    Hi you 2
Why don’t you mention the knitting festival in Denmark in your calendar, I am looking forward to seeing you there, and there’s still some spots left on the knitting classes
    Se you
