NEW NORDIC UNISEX – Our new knitwear collection for Rowan

We always get so excited for autumn, when we finally get to talk about the new collections which we design for ROWAN! Designing a 10-12 piece collection like this takes a lot of time and effort, from coming up with an idea for the inspiration to designing the garments, selecting the colours and then seeing the garments come to life. And then, at some point, we have to think of a theme for the photoshoot and work on styling ideas. It’s a lot of work, but totally worth it when we see the final results!  We usually spend about 15 months working on a collection, but we don’t actually knit any of the garments ourselves. At most, we knit swatches to accompany our sketches and measurements. It is so much better for us to focus on the designs and build a strong collection with some great visual impact, which is what we do best. And then we let the Rowan technical team focus on knitting the samples, grading the designs and writing the patterns, which is what they do best!

Our new collection for Rowan is inspired by traditional Norwegian rose painting and woodcarving. We decided that we wanted to work with a classic fit which would be suitable for both men and women, so this is definitely a unisex collection.

Check out our video below to see us explain our work and the inspiration and continue scrolling to see some of the images from the collection, which was photographed entirely around our home in Norway, last January! Click on any image to purchase the pattern.

Enjoy!

Wow Arne & Carlos, your new collection is so beautiful! I have been in love with Rosemaling designs ever since I was little and first saw my mum’s beautiful national costume, so am so excited about these designs! I really like Ari and can’t wait to try making it.

The old Norwegian names you’ve given them are lovely, maybe you can share the way you choose names on a sit and knit for a bit podcast? I’ve got names on the brain as I am pregnant with a “hug me later” baby. All my knit-along patches will be stitched together into a very cosy baby blanket.

Darlings – do you have an alternative photo of Trym?
Bit difficult to make out what the front looks like, no?

Absolutely gorgeous! I love rosemaling, as we call it in my family. I have a large wooden tray that was rose-painted for my grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary. Thank you for sharing your inspiration with Norwegian culture and history in this outstanding collection.

Preferred patterns: I love (1) the Trym cardigan and (2) and the Thore sweater in this new collection.

Your explanations are enlightening. Thank you, Arne & Carlos.

I totally cannot wait for your next post each week. Blog, Youtube, anywhere, anything. Your new collection is so beautiful and I am only sorry that I cannot buy everything you offer. I am so glad you are both recovering from the dreaded covid and continue to share your thoughts, culture and patterns with us. I understand how long the recovery from this can be and how debilitating it can be. Love your work and your generous sharing of everything.

I absolutely love the Rein and Trym patterns! And the green on Gjoran. Concerning the Indian Summer (I think its is a Canadian expression), it is a period of hot days after the summer and after a period that was cold. Some years, we don’t have an Indian Summer which lasts only a few days.

Thanks for your new Norwegian designs. I love the book, its so much fun to browse through it. I love all the designs they are so artistic, a current interpretation on lovely folk art. I wish I had the time to knit all of them.
