This time, I have the task of doing the video tutorial all by myself, as Carlos was busy working on something else. See the tutorial here
We developed what we call the “perfect pattern for a fair isle hat” many years ago. The hat is worked with 96 stitches, a good stitch count since it is a multiple of 4. It makes it so much easier to design fair Isle patterns and balance them properly on the hat. We have knitted this with Schacehnmayr Merino Extra Fine 85 on big needles and goes really quickly.
MATERIALS
Yarn: Aran weight yarn: Schachenmayr (Patons in the UK) Merino Extra Fine 85, 100% virgin wool (92 yd/85 m / 50 g). You will need 4 colours, and 50 grams of each colour. Buy the yarn here.
Needles: U.S. sizes 7 and 8 / 4.5 and 5: 16 in / 40 cm circulars; U.S. size 8 / 5 mm: set of 5 dpn
Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4 x 4 in / 10 x 10 cm.
Adjust needle sizes to obtain correct gauge if necessary.
HAT
With smaller circular, CO 96 sts. Join, being careful not to twist cast-on row. Place marker for beginning of round. Work 8 rnds k2, p2 ribbing.
Change to larger circular and work in pattern for 34 rnds.
Now shape the crown as follows:
Rnd 35: (K1, k2tog, k18, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 36: K88.
Rnd 37: (K1, k2tog, k16, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 38: K80.
Rnd 39: (K1, k2tog, k14, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 40: K72.
Rnd 41: (K1, k2tog, k12, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 42: K64.
Rnd 43: (K1, k2tog, k10, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 44: K56.
Rnd 45: (K1, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 46: K48.
Rnd 47: (K1, k2tog, k6, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 48: K40.
Rnd 49: (K1, k2tog, k4, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 50: K32.
Rnd 51: (K1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 52: K24.
Rnd 53: (K1, k2tog, k2tog, k1) around.
Rnd 54: K16.
Rnd 55: (K1, k2tog, k1) around.
Cut yarn and draw end through rem 12 sts. Pull tightly and weave in all ends neatly on WS. Lightly steam press the hat under a damp pressing cloth but do not press ribbing.
Add a pompom to the top, if you want.
