Free Mystery Stocking Knit-Along 2025

The Quiet Thread

Issue No. 06 – The Mystery of the Christmas Stocking
Stories from our home at 682.5 metres above sea level

Edit: The free pattern for the stocking knit along is no longer available.

We are delighted to announce our free mystery stocking knit-along for 2025, following in the footsteps of the popular versions from 2023 and 2024.

This year, though, will not be quite the same. A few surprises are waiting — little twists that we hope will make you smile — and all will be revealed on October 27, when the first episode goes live.

From then, the journey continues for four cosy weeks, ending on November 23. Each day from Monday to Saturday, we’ll share a new clue — a small section to knit — slowly shaping itself into a finished Christmas stocking. Sundays will bring something extra, with special surprises woven into the weekly episodes.

The pattern is completely free and will be available both here on our blog, where you can download the daily clues, and on our YouTube channel, where we’ll guide you through each step in the weekly episodes.

We’re sharing the yarn details now so you can prepare ahead and be ready to cast on.

YARN

Rowan Norwegian Wool — 100% wool, 50 g balls (125 m / 137 yds)

You’ll need 50 g of each of the following colours:

Off White: Cloud Dancer #014
Red: Ribbon Red #016
Green: Emerald #017
Navy: Coastal Fjord #013
Mustard: Golden Nugget #012

Since Norwegian Wool in these colours tends to sell out quickly, you can also use any DK-weight yarn. One of our favourites is Hillesvåg Ask (100% Norwegian wool, 100 g hanks / 315 m / 344 yds), available from ull.no.

Suggested Ask equivalents:
Off White: Ubleket Hvit #6057
Red: Bonderød #6013
Green: Grønn #6024
Navy: Marineblå #6038
Mustard: Messinggul #6092

Because ASK comes in 100-gram hanks, one hank of each colour is enough for two stockings. The first can be finished during the knit-along in November, and you’ll still have time — and yarn — to knit a second one in December. The navy and mustard shades are used only in small amounts, so you’ll have leftovers of those colours.

For knitters in the USA, Wool & Co in Elgin carries both Hillesvåg Ask and Rowan Norwegian Wool, with good stock currently available only. They also offer free U.S. shipping and very quick delivery times. Here are the links for both yarns: Norwegian Wool and ASK

👉 You can also explore compatible DK-weight alternatives on Yarn Sub.

A note on yarn flexibility

When it comes to stockings — and especially our Christmas balls — yarn choice is wonderfully forgiving. There’s no sizing to match or fit to worry about. If you knit with a thinner yarn, your stocking will be smaller; with a thicker one, it will be larger. Both work beautifully. You might wish to follow the traditional colours, or you may prefer to experiment with texture and tone. The most important thing is simply to enjoy the knitting.

Needles

Sets of dpns 3 and 3.5 mm / U.S. 2 or 3 and 4 or circulars if you prefer magic loop.

Socktober Offer

To celebrate Socktober, all our sock and stocking patterns are 30% off until Sunday, October 12.

I see the printed instructions on the bottom of day one. I’m sorry I missed it!

    • Cheri on November 4, 2025 at 4:06 pm

Hi! I am a newbie and just received my yarn yesterday. I’ve watched all the episodes and have downloaded the chart each day. But I wondered if there were written instructions or some place that it talks about the method used to cast on? Thank you for taking the time to respond. I tried to look through the comments to see if someone else has already asked this question. But most of the comments were related to the quiz and general fun chitchat! Happy knitting!

the chart is there, you need to click on the grey box, above the go to comments box, and then on the kal line.

    • TLH on October 28, 2025 at 12:02 am

For those asking for today’s PATTERN LOCATION:

You are currently on the blog entry for Oct. 4th; so first, you need to go to where all the blog entries are listed. if you are on a computer, click on BLOG at the top of the page (I don’t know how the page appears on other devices). Then, you will need to select each day’s entry as they are posted. So currently only the blog for Oct. 27th is up. On the blog entry for the day there are links in the blog post for both that day’s pattern/chart and for the corresponding video. I hope that helps! Good Luck, and happy knitting!

    • Lady Jane on October 27, 2025 at 11:46 pm

***To everyone looking for the pattern!***
Each new part of the pattern will be a new blog post. If you click the “BLOG” tab at the top it will lead you to the most recent posts for the pattern. Each day (around 1pmEST) a video is released on their YouTube channel featuring the next 6 rows of the pattern and the blog post goes live shortly after. No videos on Sunday.
If you’re having early issues with the toe, in last year’s videos Arne appears to be knitting the whole thing in real time, so I would recommend referring back to previous years videos and blogs for the setup instructions if you’re having trouble.
    Happy holiday knitting season, all!

    • Sue Nelson on October 27, 2025 at 10:00 pm

Where do I find the instructions for the toe? I have purchased the yarn, but i’m disappointed that I can’t find the beginning of the stocking.

    • Dana on October 27, 2025 at 9:33 pm

Not sure if anyone has already posted the answer to the question of how many stitches to cast on starting the toe. According to the chart the toe starts with 4 stitches per needle for a total of 16. The chart shows the increases. If you dont read a chart it shows – knit 2 rows, then do an increase round, knit a round, do another increase row until you have completed 28 rows. Hope this is more helpful than confusing. Blessings

    • Lyn on October 27, 2025 at 9:21 pm

I ve looked and looked but can’t seem the beginning for toe cast on that supposedly was up for the Christmas sock kal I realize the 6 rows start tomorrow the 28th but thought you could get the toe cast on by today. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

    • Donna Carmean on October 27, 2025 at 7:41 pm

    • Kristen Strand on October 27, 2025 at 7:06 pm

I’ve watched the video for the beginning of the 2025 Christmas Stocking, and am now on the blog. It’s the 27th at 12:05 US Pacific time, and I can’t locate the first section to begin the toe. Have you posted it yet?

Im new. this will be my first stocking. I’m super excited and you two r adorable 😍

    • Joan on October 27, 2025 at 6:03 pm

I have watched the youtube Episode 1. I have checked the blog. I do not find “cast on XX stitches for round toe in red” I can see from Arne’s sample that he has accomplished that. It is now 12 noon MST on October 27th. The screen in the youtube video is beautiful. I just wish this KAL was more straightforward. I have watched Arne and Carlos for years. I have many patterns.
    thanks
    Joan

Greetings from San Clemente, (Southern) California. I just received my yarn and am going for a rustic, warm look and feel. I decided to use Knit Picks DK, 100% Baby Alpaca “Andean Treasure” in: “Horchata Heather”, “Verdant Heather”, “Goldenrod Heather”, “Embers Heather”, and Cascadia Heather”. This yarn is deliciously soft and beautiful. Is anyone else trying a different color-way? So excited to get the stocking started! Happy knitting all! 😃

    • Jenn on October 15, 2025 at 6:40 am

Ordered wool tonight. Should get here just in time! Looking forward to it!

    Looking forward to this.

    • Rita Ball on October 8, 2025 at 1:00 am

    • Leigh on October 8, 2025 at 12:56 am

So delighted you both are doing a third year – love my stockings from the last two years. Have wool left over from last year, so just need to top up and purchase the navy & mustard colours. Looking forward to the ‘little twist surprises’ .

    • Barb Clarke on October 7, 2025 at 9:08 pm

Excellent news, I have been part of this the last 2 years and made those stockings for my first grandchild in 2024 and my new daughter in law in 2023. We now have a new grandson born July 2025 and I was hoping you would do it again so I could make his stocking. I did already buy your newest stocking pattern in case you weren’t doing the knit along this year. I may have a new son in law this year so will do up both. HAHA love your patterns, thank you to both of you. Hugs

    • Pat Z on October 7, 2025 at 8:56 pm

What a lovely surprise to come home and read about a new KAL stocking. I still have to knit last years but will definitely try to get the new design so I can get started on some surprise gifts.

    • Karen on October 7, 2025 at 8:16 pm

Thank you for once again bringing us the cosiness and fun of a month spent in your company, creating Christmas cheer. At a time when things seem to be going mad, it’s lovely that Arne and Carlos fans across the world can be in community and knitting friendship together. Looking forward to it!

    • Phyllis on October 7, 2025 at 7:14 pm

I love these knit alongs. Did my first one last year. Can’t wait. I wonder if this is the same 2025 stocking pattern that I bought online. It has the same colors except for the mustard. I started and finished that one but had to take it out because the heel came out in the wrong place. Not sure what I did wrong. I started over, so hopefully it comes out right this time.

Cool I ordered the Yarn so I will be ready!! I have some Norwegian wool in my stash but not enough.
To make mine unique would be # 023 red violet be a nice red in place of ribbon red?
I ordered both just in case so I can be prepared to do either one if # 023 will work in your design, I’ll use that. If not I’ll have the ribbon red handy.
I love that we are doing this again this year!! Thank you!!

    • Jennifer on October 7, 2025 at 3:16 pm
