Carlos is back and we have released the pattern for a new crochet throw!

Hi everyone!

It’s good to be here again! As most of you already know, I tested positive for COVID-19 after becoming seriously ill on March 26th. The reason I was tested in the first place was that I was so sick, that the doctors were considering admitting me to hospital. I have since recovered from the virus but am now suffering from Post Viral Syndrome and will remain on sick leave until May 17th, as I am still very weak and can’t do much right now. But, I am feeling better and better every day and hope that I’ll be able to be back at full speed from May 18th!

This week, on our YouTube Channel, we are doing it podcast style! We’ve just released a new floral crochet throw that we are calling Astri and in our podcast, we talk about what has been going on in our lives lately, while Arne crochets a flower. I was so happy that I was able to take part in this podcast, which was recorded a few days ago. Please keep in mind that this not a tutorial, just some crochet radio, where you can sit in your favourite spot and join us for a while. See the podcast here:

The ARNE & CARLOS Daily Quarantine Knitting Podcast Coming Back Soon!

We are delighted to announce that our Daily Quarantine Knitting podcast will resume this coming Wednesday April 22, 2020. We will do episodes every weekday until May 1st.

Looking forward to getting back to our daily quarantine podcast, so see you next Wednesday!

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all healthcare workers all over the world, who are on the front lines of the corona virus outbreak, for the hard work they put in every single day. We all owe them a great debt and we will certainly never forget their service!

Thank you for the health updates. So glad you are recovering and to see you smile Carlos! Arne, you are a huge inspiration and so glad you are well! This is a lovely throw with a very appropriate name. Much continued health and wishing you all the best. You both are doing all of the patterns for all of us, when you could just stop and take time off. You are amazing people who care about so many. Hugs to you from California.

So glad to see you up and about! Just take it easy , and get plenty of rest!
Love the flowers in your blanket! I purchased a few of your books, and I’m going to start the granny square butterfly pattern ! ( I was in college when the granny squares really were trending here in the US, so they really are still a favorite with me! ) Just have to get some more yarns gathered together from my stash!
Both of you take care !

    • Lisa Villone on April 19, 2020 at 6:33 pm

Yaaaay! You’re back!! I missed you both so much. I’m relieved to hear that you’re on the mend Carlos. I also had that extreme fatigue after I had the virus. My energy returned in “spits and spurts” meaning I’d get a burst of energy one day for a few hours and get a lot done, then I’d be exhausted the next day. I know now that I overdid it. Anyway, this tiredness could last a few weeks, so try not to worry or push yourself like I did!
I drink a smoothie made with 3 kale leaves (no stems-yuck!), 1 cup of frozen blueberries, and half of a banana for sweetness (sometimes I used stevia if I didn’t have banana) and cold water. I think it helped me get better. It tastes good! I’d also squeeze in some lime juice because I love lime!
I’ve never sent such a long comment. Sorry about that. You two have helped me immeasurably during this quarantine…..Thank you! I sat in my living room this morning clapping and crying happy tears when I heard you say you’d continue the KAL into May! Best always, Lisa

    special swatches❤️❤️

    • Carolyn on April 19, 2020 at 7:06 pm

I wonder if you two know how much you have given us? (Rhetorical) Thank you! Post viral syndrome IS nasty… a shower can be your work for the day. Especially if the illness was in the respiratory system. (Registered nurse from Seattle) PS during the original Quarantine knitting, you mentioned some shirts had shrunk in the wash. I imagine they are loose now 🙃 Glad you are on the mend and Arne, I have missed your giggle.

    • Beverly your Ness on April 19, 2020 at 7:09 pm

Yay Carlos! You’re back to being in the world again. I’m so happy to see you again. I’m happy to see Arne as well, and I’m so glad he didn’t kill you with his cooking. Arne, I’m so curious how you kept from getting the coronavirus, but I’m so glad you weren’t both infected, especially at the same time. Take it easy and take care. Thank you for keeping in touch with us all. xox

    • Susan O'Neill on April 19, 2020 at 7:22 pm

Hooray, so glad to hear from you. It will be good when you are fully recovered and look forward to that day. Don’t rush, none of us are going anywhere.

    • cathleen on April 19, 2020 at 11:50 pm

Hallelujah – Praise God! I feel like actually dancing – I’m so happy to see you both again ! At first I thought the video was pre-recorded since it is Sunday – then holy cow ! It’s new – YAY!

Maybe Arne can crochet Carlos a zippered cardigan sweater/jacket in the new flower blanket pattern — because it looks FANTASTIC on him/you! The colors are just incredible, lively, and vibrant – just like a new beginning for spring. What does “life after Covid” look like? it looks like LIFE!!!!

The new Carlos = crazy beautiful colors! no more gray for you!!!!
Arne: throw out all his gray clothes on trash day before he gets up in the morning ! 😀
welcome back you two! we all were praying hard…so glad they were answered so quickly.

much love and hugs, cathy (near Niagara Falls NY)

    Arne & Carlos,
It has been so delightful to see and hear the two of you during your first podcast after your illness Carlos. Welcome back into our world. Carlos, you looked and sounded like your old self. I know you are anxious to be active, to be out and to do things, but be patient with yourself and listen to your body. It will guide you.
Arne, make Carlos some of your delicious Norwegian waffles. I think he will enjoy them.
I look forward to watching your podcast on the 22nd.
    Bless you both…Gail

I discovered your podcast while being in quarantine here in Kalamazoo Michigan and was inspired by your tutorials to learn to knit. (I have been a crocheter for 5 yrs.) • Kafrin on April 20, 2020 at 4:04 am

Glad you are more well than you were, Carlos, but if you have Post Viral Syndrome, whatever you do, don’t be pressured into doing too much too soon! Make very sure that you take the time to get well again at your body’s own pace, regardless of pressures put on you by other people or yourself, whether real or imagined. If you don’t recover properly now, with lots of rest (even if it is horribly boring!) and fresh healthy nutritious food, you could be affected by Post Viral Fatigue for the rest of your life. Do only half of what you feel able to do; increase your activity by very small increments — think 10% only — and cosset yourself for a few months. It will mean extra work for Arne for a time, but to get you back to full strength, it’s worth it. (I say all this as I have had PVFS for many years, due to trying to speed my recovery from flu in the 1980’s, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.) Take care of yourselves, be sensible, and be blessed. K

So glad you’re better, Carlos. Astrid seems such an appropriate name for this new blanket. My husband’s family is a very old Norwegian family, and Astrid is a family name that goes back many centuries and now belongs to our 7-year-old granddaughter. However, I think it is appropriate for the blanket because Astrid was one of the Valkyries whose role was to come down to earth among the wounded and choose who lived or died on the battlefields. And Corona is certainly a battlefield!
    Stay well!

I’ve thought of you often during this challenging time, wondering if you both were ok, and thinking about how much you’ve uplifted people with your inspiring and entertaining quarantine knitting podcasts. I’ve just now finished my 18 squares and have assembled them to make into 2 cushions. I’ll have fond memories of you, Arne & Carlos, each time I see the cushions on my sofa.

So very happy that you are on the mend Carlos! Arne must be an excellent care giver. We have missed you but so very glad you did not have to go to the hospital. I was on the cruise March 1-10 and luckily I have not had any symptoms. Please continue to recover. We want you back 100%.

On another note will we be able to see the group picture that was taken on the ship? Would love to see it and reminisce what a wonderful time we all had. What was the 1 Norwegian word you told us at one of your lectures to remember?

Love and miss both of you,

So happy to see Carlos on the road back into good health! I’m still doing my patches after a long day of working from home. I don’t think I could do a blanket though, no patience fo all the joining. 😀

    • marie-anne cochet on April 22, 2020 at 3:46 pm

Ravie de vous revoir, et de vous savoir sorti de cette terrible maladie. Je suis avec attention la reprise, vous verrez que nous avons été sages et avons bien travaillé en votre absence!

    • Kim Rouke on April 22, 2020 at 9:13 pm

I’m so happy that you are feeling better. My prayers are lifting to the heavens that you will be fully recovered soon.

I am sticking with the pillows. I will never get 96 patches done. Can you tell us how to knit the back of the pillows? I don’t have a clue how to do it. Thanks.

    • Deb on April 22, 2020 at 11:35 pm

So thankful that you are both doing well and much better now. I was praying. I found an article on you in Vogue Knitting Holiday 2011, Collector’s Issue that I recently purchased from Lion Brand and was glad to see it. It was a back issue. Title was Deck the Halls. Have a great day/life.

    • Lois S. Levine-Elman on April 23, 2020 at 4:16 am

Hi: Just discovered your squares and am looking forward to listening to your Podcasts. I like to do double sided knitting. I have watched your YouTube tutorial and I realize that I use the slow technique.
Carlos: I am sorry that you have been sick and hope that you will give yourself the needed time to recover. I am coping with the side effects of cancer treatment. I know what it feels like to be so tired that it is an unbelievable effort to move.
I love looking at the pictures of both of you including photos of the new blanket you just designed. Thanks for brightening this difficult time of isolation. Lois Elman

    • Gabrielle Carter on April 23, 2020 at 8:56 am

Hope you are still recovering and resting as needed. Thank-you so much for doing the knit-a -long and sharing the patterns .
It has been enjoyable and achievable even if some of us have done just a few squares for a scarf or cushion.
For nearly everyone no matter the country the uncertainty and anxiety is difficult to deal with .Many like you have had to self-isolate in order to be safe and do the right thing. Look after yourselves and thank-you for all the joy the knitting has brought.
In Australia the cold weather has just arrived …….

    • Ann Collins on April 23, 2020 at 12:35 pm

I am so pleased you are on the mend Carlos – I am sure Arne and Freya took great care of you! I am gradually knitting the squares and MUST learn to crochet. You are both shining lights. XXX

    • Karen Koziol on April 23, 2020 at 3:37 pm

What good teachers you are b/c by telling us about your experience we can learn so much.

How nice to learn that you are on the mend. Good news is so welcome these days. Well done Carlos.

The ongoing saga about porridge is something that keeps me “tuned in” so please don’t withhold any stories about the “drama”.
….which grain (oats? wheat? barley? corn? rice? millet?buckwheat?… triticale?– so many choices)
….or which toppings (brown sugar? maple syrup? fruit? peanut butter? Nutella? nuts? shredded coconut? molasses?)
    or which technique…

Seriously, John, Alice and I are so grateful that you two do what you do and that you survived this
COVID-19 nightmare. We remain at home, sheltering in our home in NY, and are sending you thoughts of healing and love. Karen Koziol RN

    • Lucille on April 23, 2020 at 6:52 pm

Hi Arne and Carlos. I have been watching your you tube shows for a few months and I enjoy them very much. I am so glad that you have recovered from the virus. Relax and regain your strength. Looking forward to watching your daily quarantine podcasts. I have not started the squares yet as I have too little yarn at the moment, and we are also lockdown here in south africa, but as soon as I can yet to my local yarn shop I am going to buy yarn. Thinking of making the pillow . Thank you for the lovely patterns.

    • Mariaelena Rayburn on April 23, 2020 at 8:44 pm

Glad to see you did get better, take it easy and get your energy back, love your Podcasts!!!!

    • Marie on April 27, 2020 at 2:33 pm

It is wonderful to see that you are in the mend. I have purchased the pattern for the Astrid crochet throw. I am very rusty in crochet techniques. It would be very nice to have a SLOW (Arne is so fast even when he tries to be slow!) demonstration of making a flower. Somehow my attempts always look different compared to the intended one! Thank you so much

    • Becky Wahl on April 30, 2020 at 10:04 pm

How about “Arne & Carlos United Together Podcast”

    • Carol Espinosa on May 2, 2020 at 2:13 am

I am glad you are getting better, but please take it slowly! Pushing too hard can cause serious setbacks.

There is a supplement called Co-Q10 which helps your body rebuild its supply of ATP, a chemical released by your mitochondrial cells as the power for your muscles. It can help you recover stamina after being very sick. BUT please do your own research on it and ask your doctor.

Hi Arne and Carlos this is a lovely pattern to use up your stash and I’m enjoying making the flowers. Has anyone else commented on the joining pattern? The first round after the completed flower, to give the edging to the flower, is firstly quite difficult to understand and then very fiddly. Do you think you could do a podcast to show how you do it?

    • Lorna on May 6, 2020 at 11:17 pm

Dear Carlos- much love and many virtual hugs from NZ – busy knitting your sock yarn teddy bear for my great nephew. Love the colours and joy in your work. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
